Maputo, formerly known as Lourenco Marques, is the capital of Mozambique and is located to the south of the country. Its economy is centered around the harbour. It calls forth much of the atmosphere of its Portuguese colonial past with its wide streets lined with acacia and jacaranda trees.
Maputo is located on the west side of Maputo Bay which is at the mouth of The Tembe River. The length of the Maputo bay is 95km and its width is 30km.
Maputo has excellant hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and even a casino. Maputo offers visitors the opportunity to view many sights of historical, cultural and scenic beauty. A few historical sites include The Fish Market , The Botanical Gardens, the central market, which offers a wide variety of handicrafts in addition to fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs. Inhaca Island is 34 km out into Maputo Bay and is easily accessible by boat or light aircraft while the Maputo National Reserve lies 80 km to the south of the city.
